What Is Polypropylene Fiber for Concrete?

Polypropylene fiber for concrete is a high-performance synthetic microfiber added to fresh concrete and mortar to control plastic shrinkage cracking, improve impact and abrasion resistance, and enhance long-term durability. Each kilogram contains millions of discrete filaments that uniformly distribute throughout the matrix, bridging microcracks before they propagate.

Virgin polypropylene fiber — produced from 100% new resin, not recycled flakes — guarantees consistent tensile strength (≥500 MPa), uniform 30–32 μm diameter, and predictable dispersion. This is the grade specified by ready-mix producers, precast plants, and tunnel contractors worldwide.

In polypropylene fiber for shotcrete applications, the fibers also reduce rebound loss, improve cohesion of the sprayed mix, and provide passive fire-spalling resistance — a critical safety feature in tunnels, mines, and underground structures.

Applications of Polypropylene Fiber

From residential slabs to tunnel linings, virgin polypropylene fiber delivers measurable performance gains across concrete, mortar, and shotcrete systems.

Concrete Slabs & Floors

Controls plastic shrinkage cracks in residential, commercial, and industrial floor slabs. Replaces welded wire mesh for crack control in non-structural slabs on grade.

Precast & Precast Elements

Improves impact resistance and edge durability of pipes, manhole covers, hollow-core slabs, and segmental linings. Reduces demoulding damage.

Shotcrete & Tunnel Lining

Polypropylene fiber for shotcrete reduces rebound (typically from 30% to <15%), improves cohesion, and provides fire-spalling resistance in tunnels and mine galleries.

Plaster, Render & Mortar

6 mm microfiber minimizes hairline cracks in wall plaster, external render, and masonry mortar. Improves bond strength and weathering resistance.

Polypropylene Fiber for Shotcrete — Engineering Spotlight

Sprayed concrete (shotcrete) demands fiber reinforcement that disperses instantly, resists pump blockage, and delivers energy absorption in tunnel linings, slope stabilization, and mine support. Virgin PP fiber is the contractor-preferred choice — here's why.

Why PP Fiber in Shotcrete?

  • Reduces rebound from 25–35% (unreinforced) down to 10–15%
  • Improves first-pass adhesion and builds thickness faster
  • Provides post-crack residual strength (EN 14488-5)
  • Melts at 160 °C, creating steam-venting channels that prevent explosive spalling in tunnel fires
  • Lightweight (0.91 g/cm³) — pumps smoothly without abrasion to equipment
  • Non-corrosive — no rust staining on tunnel faces or mine walls

Recommended Grades & Dosage

  • Wet-mix shotcrete, urban tunnels: 12 mm @ 1.0–1.5 kg/m³
  • Dry-mix shotcrete, mine galleries: 12 mm @ 1.5–2.0 kg/m³
  • Heavy-duty tunnel linings, slope: 19 mm @ 1.5–2.0 kg/m³
  • Combine with macro-synthetic or steel fiber for hybrid toughness
  • Compliant with EN 14487, EN 14488, ASTM C1116 Type III

Virgin vs Recycled Polypropylene Fiber — Why It Matters

Recycled PP fiber may look identical in the bag, but its inconsistent melt-flow index, weak tensile strength, and variable length cause clumping, premature fiber pull-out, and unpredictable crack control. For spec-critical projects, virgin PP fiber is the only defensible choice.

Recommended

Virgin Polypropylene Fiber

  • 100% new resin, single-source melt flow index
  • Tensile strength consistently ≥500 MPa
  • Uniform 30–32 μm diameter — no clumping
  • Length tolerance ±1 mm — even distribution
  • Surface-treated for cement bond (optional)
  • Full traceability — COA per batch
  • Compliant with EN 14889-2 Class I, ASTM C1116
  • Approved for tunnel, infrastructure, and precast specs
Avoid for Specs

Recycled PP Fiber

  • Mixed source resins — variable melt flow
  • Tensile strength often 300–400 MPa (unpredictable)
  • Irregular diameter — fiber balling and visible lumps
  • Length variation ±3–5 mm — uneven dispersion
  • Surface contamination reduces cement bond
  • No batch traceability — no COA
  • Fails EN 14889-2 Class I requirements
  • Risk of project rejection and warranty claims

General FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions Questions

Polypropylene fiber is added to concrete at 0.6–1.2 kg/m³ to control plastic shrinkage cracking, improve impact and abrasion resistance, and enhance fire spalling resistance. It is widely used in slabs, precast elements, shotcrete tunnel linings, plasters, and renders.

Virgin polypropylene fiber is produced from 100% new resin with consistent tensile strength (≥500 MPa), controlled diameter (30–32 μm), and predictable dispersion. Recycled PP fiber often has variable melt flow, weaker tensile strength, and inconsistent length, leading to clumping and unreliable crack control.

For shrinkage and temperature crack control in non-structural slabs on grade, polypropylene fiber can replace welded wire mesh when dosed at 0.9–1.2 kg/m³. Structural reinforcement (load-bearing slabs, beams, columns) still requires steel rebar designed by a licensed engineer.

For wet-mix and dry-mix shotcrete, 12 mm and 19 mm PP microfibers are most common. 12 mm fibers disperse easily and reduce rebound; 19 mm fibers offer higher toughness and are preferred for tunnel linings, slope stabilization, and mine galleries.

Typical dosage is 0.6–0.9 kg/m³ for crack control in slabs and plaster, 0.9–1.2 kg/m³ for industrial floors and precast, and 1.0–2.0 kg/m³ for shotcrete and high-impact applications. Always run a trial batch to verify workability and finishing.

At recommended dosage, virgin PP fiber has minimal impact on slump (≤10 mm loss) and does not reduce compressive strength. Slight increase in water demand (~1–2%) is normal and is compensated by your admixture supplier. Excessive dosage above 2.0 kg/m³ can reduce workability.

Our virgin PP fiber complies with EN 14889-2 (Class I — microfiber), ASTM C1116 (Type III synthetic fiber-reinforced concrete), and GB/T 21120 (Chinese national standard). Full COA, MSDS, and third-party test reports available upon request.

Standard packaging: 0.9 kg water-soluble bags in 9 kg cartons, or 1,000 kg big bags. Custom packaging and OEM branding available. Shipping: FOB Qingdao, CFR, CIF, or DDP. Lead time 7–10 working days for stock grades, 20 days for custom lengths.
